fallen angels — chapter 3.6: hunt

Warning: Foul Language. Mild Sexual References. Violence. Pictures may take a moment to load. It is recommended you read this chapter on my blog, not Reader. The song for this chapter is This is the Hunt by Ruelle.

The night is cold when I carefully shut the door behind me, the chilly breath of fall beginning to settle over Bridgeport. I’ve stolen some old black clothes from the back of Lilith’s wardrobe, taken the spare key and some of the money I brought from back home, and a small knife from the kitchen just in case. I’ve hidden them in the inside pocket of the jacket, the blade in a makeshift sheath underneath. I feel my nerves begin to prickle over my skin as I walk out onto the street. The city looks so ominous at night, even with the sparkling lights, and as Gabriel said, I’m not safe out here all alone. I need to be constantly watching my back.

image

Gabriel and the others are long gone by now, in the car. I’ll have to catch a taxi, which is a little daunting since I have no idea around this city, but Lilith did mention the name of the club. The trouble is finding my way to the nearest taxi stand, and while I remember one from my car trip to the coffee house yesterday, the distance through the shadowed buildings is quite far.

image

I push down my anxiety and try pull my resolve together. It’s not like I’m defenseless — Mom has made sure of that. It’s just Bridgeport seems so much more dangerous than I’m used to, and there could be all kind of characters hidden in the many dark alleys. I take a deep breath and set off along the seaside road, trying to keep as close to the tarmac as possible. Cars rumble past me every few minutes, but generally I feel very small and alone.

image

I curse at my blind left eye under my breath. In the night, it’s much more of a hindrance than usual, and I strain my ears as I walk quickly towards the city centre. The city seems so much more… alive in the night. Although this road is quiet, with the still ocean on one side and silent apartment blocks on the other, there’s a deep, thudding heartbeat to the city that I have never felt before; a menacing presence that keeps me light on my toes.

As I walk, I wonder what I am getting myself into. Gabriel told me to stay in the penthouse with good reason; only yesterday he had told me to never go out alone. And yet here I am, walking by myself at night with little clue of where I am going. I’m being reckless. Should I continue to disregard Gabriel’s order? Or should I go back to my safe, comfortable bed and sleep the exhausting day away?

image

I should, but curiosity and fear for what I might get myself into if I go any longer blind, is what keeps me going. Naturally, growing up under the strict hand of a distinguished police officer, and receiving two years of law enforcement training myself, makes me want to uncover what criminal activities my new flatmates could be involved in. And on the other hand, the naive part of me wants to be assured that Gabriel really is a good person. In truth, I don’t want to leave this place, no matter how scary it is.

image

A bird calls, low and longing, jarring me out of my thought-clouded head. I need to be alert and keep my senses open to every little sound of the night. Although the breeze that sweeps down the road is icy, the nerves sparkling across my body are like tiny hot needles. I’m almost to the bright lights of the taxi stand when I pass a particularly shadowed alley and my nerves spark even more. There’s movement in there. Two men emerging out of the blackness. I tense up and begin walking faster, desperately hoping that I’m not the focus of their attention. But I can hear their footsteps on the pavement behind me, and my breathing speeds up, fear suddenly running cold through my veins.

“Hey.” A hand grabs roughly at my shoulder and I whip around to face them, moving back into a defensive position instantly. “What?” I snap, and I am surprised at how irritated I sound compared to the fear I’m really feeling. The two men definitely have shifty intentions, with black cloth wrapped crudely around the lower halves of their faces and rendering them anonymous. They look like your typical city street mugger; middle class white boys with nothing else to do on summer break. The kind like Teddy Schnauzer. My strong retort must have caught them a little off guard, for they glance at one another, but the next second they advance, pulling switch knives out of their jackets.

image

“Bet you have some cash somewhere on that pretty little body.” One of the men leers, his dark eyes gleaming as he looks me up and down. The other man snickers and burning anger flares in my stomach. “Go away,” I snarl, slipping my own knife out of the sleeve behind my back. “You aren’t getting anything, and if you try, you’ll really regret it. I mean it.”

Both of them laugh now. “You’re just a girl, what are you going to do, sweetheart? Cry for help?” The man on the left sneers. The remark makes my blood boil further and I pull my own knife out from behind my back. “Fine. I’ll see who’s crying by the end.” It shocks the two men — I can see from the way their eyes widen. “I bet you’re all words and no action.” Mugger One regains his composure and chuckles, his eyes roaming over me again in a way that makes me feel sick. “You’ll be screaming for help soon enough.”

image

He lunges at me, the knife flashing silver, and I dart out of the way, my own blade hitting the hilt of his, and I twist down hard so his weapon skitters out of his grip. The redhead comes in from the other side, and I use my body weight to swing around Mugger One so the other man has to recoil to avoid stabbing his friend. In the second where both men are disconcerted, I slam my foot into Mugger One’s chest and send the man I swung around crashing to the ground.

I roll neatly to a stop and brush myself off, scooping up the three blades which now lie away from the two groaning men. “I said you would regret it.” I give the men a hard kick in the side each for good measure, and walk away from them, adrenaline still racing through my blood.

“The Grind,” I tell the taxi driver.

***

There’s no sign of Lilith and the guys when the taxi pulls up in front of what looks like a disused warehouse, the front softly glowing with green neon. After paying the driver, I nervously walk towards the front doors, glancing around for Gabriel’s tall, lean figure. They are nowhere to be found, and I can only conclude that they have already entered the club, if that’s what they are really doing.

image

The rave has no bouncers, and it’s seething with many young women in tight dresses and crowds of rowdy men, already hopelessly drunk. I instantly feel out of place, not least because of my outfit, and I duck my head down, trying not to get noticed. It’s uncomfortable. Brightly coloured lasers keep on flashing through the darkness and smoke that covers the dance floor, and the music pounds in my ears. And there are so many couples making out shamelessly in the club, their drinks slopping all over themselves. Lilith was right when she said this was not my type of scene.

This is exactly the kind of place my mother would have never let me go to, and with good reason.

image

I stick close to the walls as I search the crowd, struggling in the darkness and general confusion of many bodies. Suddenly, I hear a rich, tinkling laugh through the loud music, and I turn around quickly. That sounded like Lilith’s voice, and I think it came from the other side of the rave. The dancers on the floor are so boozed up they don’t even notice when I push past them, the air sticky and warm from their collective body heat. Yes, there she is — sitting with a man in such a provocative way I turn away instantly.

Jeez. This is such an uncomfortable situation I’ve managed to land myself in. I didn’t think of what Lilith would do if she was really going out clubbing. Maybe I should just give up and get the hell out of here. But as I make up my mind to just return to the apartment, I notice the many empty bottles littered around the man by Lilith.

He’s very, very drunk — and she’s plying him with more alcohol and a hard, triumphant smile. I frown, my senses firing up again. Surely she knows about alcohol poisoning. Too many drinks and a person can pass out. Her posture is sure and calculating, as if she herself is not drunk at all…

I begin looking around the club with a renewed urgency. If Lilith is purposefully sedating him, then she must have darker intentions, and also one of the others should be close as well. My focus darts around the rave almost dizzily and all of a sudden, I see him — a stocky, tall man in a hoodie slipping out through one of the back doors, a shadow that looks just like Lucifer.

image

I begin darting through the teeming crowd to reach the door, not caring if I knock a few people over. The icy night air cleanses me of the sluggish vibe I had begun to catch in the rave. There’s a car driving away, and although it’s unfamiliar, I know it’s them from the shadows of three men I manage to glimpse in the darkened windows. I turn in a circle frantically. There’s no way I can follow them unless I find another vehicle. A bicycle, or something; and yes, there’s one chained to a pole nearby in a feeble attempt to keep it safe. A few slices from my kitchen knife, and it’s free. I can return it to the club once I find out what’s going on, for once and for all.

image

The car speeds through the city, and it’s obviously really difficult to keep up on a bicycle. But I think I have an idea of where it’s heading; the bridge that connects the wealthy hills and the metropolis. It’s lit up in all sorts of pretty colours tonight, the spectrum of lights glittering upon the river. I can’t appreciate it for more than a second, however, for I’m falling further behind and my legs are beginning to seriously hurt.

image

To my relief, the car pulls off into a dead end road once it crosses the bridge. By the time I reach it, my lungs screaming, it’s parked underneath the bridge and empty. I only allow myself a second to rest, leaning against the cold wet concrete underside. The air is sour with the stink of forgotten beer cans and salt. Everything is quiet here, except for the gritty rumble of vehicles above my head.

image

From here, I leave the bicycle and set off on foot, carefully looking for any sign that indicates where Lucifer and the other guys have disappeared, my nerves rattling. The experience in The Grind and the darkness is making me jump at any sound. I hear a rustle some way behind me, and I whip around to see… nothing at all. The night is still and silent. My panicking mind must be playing tricks on me.

I take a deep breath and try to calm down. This is exactly the sort of situation my mother spent two years training me for and I am certainly not letting all of that fall out of my hands. Instead of frantically looking around, I close my eyes and let the sounds of the night wash over me, the same way music does. After all, two ears is better than one eye.

image

A cricket chirping to another in a nearby bush. The river slowly sliding over rocks and washing up gently onto the shore. The lonely whistle of the wind as it passes under the bridge, the whispers of trees as it passes through them too, a sleepy call of a sparrow, the scuff of boots on concrete-

My eyes shoot open and I begin running towards the source of the sound. A few hundred metres away there is a flash of black, a man disappearing into the dense trees on the hill. It must be them. And I have a good suspicion of where they are heading.

image

The shadow that is probably Gabriel scales the tall spiky mansion fence as effortlessly as a cat. I crouch down behind a tree to watch the other two men, who I assume to be Luc and Raphael, follow him over the wall almost as quickly and silently. My heart thuds in my chest as I process the situation in my head.

image

The seconds tick by agonisingly as I wait for some alarm to start shrieking, for they are surely trespassing. But the night stays quiet, the mansion remaining lightless and still. It must be around ten minutes before the three men appear again, dropping down from the wall without a sound. I take a sharp breath and duck down when one of them glances to where I’m hiding, his grey eyes gleaming eerily in the faint moonlight.

I close my eyes as I lean heavily against the tree. Thieves. They are thieves. The bulges in their jackets tell me that much. I can’t say I’m surprised, yet I feel sick to my stomach and my mouth tastes bitter. I came to Bridgeport to start a new life, but not this. Somehow… I was hoping with all my heart that Gabriel would be a better person and I was mistaken. But I have been disappointed, and it’s time for me to really forget him and leave this poisonous city.

image

Goddamn my mother’s genes that I want to find out where they are going now.

I find myself following them through the dark streets of the city’s industrial district. I can see what Gabriel meant when he talked about poverty in Bridgeport yesterday. The apartments here are in obvious disrepair, and there are a number of people huddled in the alleys, despite the cold weather. I take a nervous swallow and draw my jacket tighter around myself. This place is far from friendly.

image

The men disappear into a small, dingy shop with no signage, but judging from their significantly smaller pockets as they leave, it’s a trading or pawning shop. So they must have sold whatever they stole from that mansion, and I suppose they have money out of it. And what will the money be used for? Shopping sprees, or decorating the apartment? The thought only makes me feel more sick, and more angry with myself.

But what happens next surprises me.

Gabriel heads towards one of the alleys across the street with whom I assume to be Raphael behind him. In the alley, huddling on the ground under a thin blanket, is an obviously homeless woman. Frowning, I inch closer to the road with curiosity burning along with my suspicion and fear.

image

He crouches down to converse with the woman, who miraculously smiles at him, a smile that is weary but full of gratefulness. He takes something out of his pocket and gives it to the woman, who thanks him copiously. Did Gabriel just give his money to her? But that means-

An arm wraps around my waist and a gloved hand pins my wrists on the wall above my head. Before I can shriek, a man pushes me against the wall, his weight stopping my arms and legs from moving. Even so, I try my best to escape, attempting to reach for my knives. “Stop struggling, for fuck’s sake!” The man growls, and when I glance up, startled by the familiarity of the voice, I recognise the sharp bone structure and green eyes underneath the shadows shrouding his face.

image

“Luc?” I stop wriggling, forgetting the situation for a second in my surprise. “Damn right,” He snaps, loosening his grip on my arms a little. “I’m not going to hurt you, relax.” The words have the exact opposite effect on me — I glare up at his face, now extremely pissed off at him. “Then why the hell did you attack me for?”

“To stop you from running away.” Lucifer says easily. “Stop it, I said I’m not going to hurt you.” He repeats slowly as I resume my futile attempt to push him off me. “And why should I trust you?” I snarl, finally losing my temper. “I’ve found out who you really are -petty-fucking-criminals– and I’m over and done with you and your brother! Let me go right now because I’m leaving. It was a stupid mistake coming here in the first place-”

image

“Is that what you really believe?” Gabriel says softly from behind his brother. I stiffen at his voice, a confusing wave of some overwhelming ache rising up inside me. “I would rather live in another city alone then live with such people like you. I heard you and Lilith talking last night, and I saw the blood,” I spit out at him, barely registering Lucifer stepping away from me, and Raphael hovering nearby. “None of that was real, Cherry. It was a ruse to interest you into following us,” Gabriel says evenly. A prickle of relief flashes through me before being drowned by anger again. “That doesn’t make things much better,” I laugh, and the sound is bitter in my throat. “I don’t want to be involved in your life!”

image

Gabriel’s grey eyes are cool and calm. “That’s not what you really think, Cherry. You cling to your mother’s beliefs when you know that this is the first place you feel you have been accepted for who you are. You feel this new life is where you really belong. You feel that here, you can let go of your pain and anger. Do you truly feel hatred for what we do when you have faced the same injustice as we have? You must have guessed why from following us tonight. It is not us you feel hatred towards, but the kind of people we take deservedly from.”

image

I don’t realise I’m crying until a hot tear drips into my hand. “You don’t know anything about me,” I hiss, shaking my head furiously. Gabriel carefully touches my arm, the act nearly burning my skin as much as my tears. “You know that everything I have said is the truth, Cherry.” He says in a low voice. “I know what you feel…”

image

“You feel that this is the first place where someone truly cares about you.”

Wow this took so long to post 0__0 *throws confetti in the air…*

I’m pretty damn disappointed with this chapter. The pictures were incredibly hard to take and they ended not being detailed or accurate enough, especially in the club scene. I got really pissed off while I was trying to take them because of the restrictions on where your sims can go and also the lagginess + emptiness of Bridgeport. For a supposedly lively city it’s just darn dead. So sorry, sub-standard pictures this time… but good news! I think I’ve finally figured out the plot for this generation! It will kick in about 2-3 chapters from now. I’ve been writing a lot!

As you can tell, both the elements of romance and crime are growing to be quite prominent in this generation; the R-16 rating is beginning to show up. I know some parts don’t flow well, especially the Gabriel + Cherry moments, but I’m hoping to improve as time goes by. Lmao actually since I wrote the last part a while ago, I admit it’s quite bad, unfortunately I’m too lazy to rewrite it.

Also, I do know I haven’t actually explained what the Torres do, but maybe you guys have gotten the basic idea? You may have seen too that I edited Luc and Gabriel a bit. They both looked so ugly I just couldn’t help myself!

Looking forward to hear your thoughts!

P.S: My favourite pose creator fyachii has created a story on wordpress and you should really check it out! The story is called Only Mine- Revamped and it’s got amazing sims, pictures and writing! It’s also very funny and I laughed out loud more than one time. So go read it now!

  1. WOW! I absolutely loved this chapter! It was beautifully written and the screenshots are great! You shouldn’t doubt your writing, it’s always been great! 🙂 I understand how you feel with the screenshots, sometimes when I write then go to take the pictures it just takes so long and then you just don’t feel like taking them anymore…
I had a feeling they were up to something, but never thought they would be that good of criminals! I honestly don’t know if Cherry should still stay with them or not, but I think Gabriel and Cherry have chemistry and he seems to be doing all of this for a cause.
    And again, great chapter! 😀

    1. Thank you so much! Yeah, the pictures have so much set up behind them that take a long time before you can actually snap one, especially for non-everyday stories like ours.
Lmao yes Gabriel and Cherry have a lot of chemistry, I think they would be such a cute couple but a whole lot of stuff is going to happen before to complicate their scenario!
Thank you for reading and commenting, shannynlee4!

  2. Yaaasss we finally found out what they do! I like the sort of Robin Hood vibe they have going on, good criminals are always an interesting bunch 🙂 I hope Cherry decides to stay with them, even though they are criminals. Her and Gabriel would be good together! Random thought, but I have to wonder how long they knew Cherry was following them… Like did they suspect she would from the very beginning when they left the house? Or did they just know after they spotted her at some point?

Also, go Cherry for taking out those muggers 😛

    1. Yes, I thought that what they do is like Robin Hood too! There will be an explanation of the reason why they have resorted to being criminals later on.
Oh, I forgot to explain this but they knew right from the beginning because Michel was following her, lol. You might have noticed that he didn’t appear in the entire chapter, and that was why.
I am excited to post the next chapters, but probably not in a while because I really want to build the bridal boutique for my wedding project and also for Izzy’s simumblr. So much to do, not enough time!
Thank you for reading and commenting, raymondsanti~

  3. *squeals with happiness over this chapter and my dogs look at me like “Dude, what’s up with you” but I don’t care because OH EM GEEEE*
    *takes a deep breath* Okay…
Pictures, awesome. Writing, awesome. Gabriel and Cherry, AWESOME. ❤
I was so, so, so, so happy to see that you posted a new chapter. So they steal from the rich and give to the poor. A little bit of Robin Hood there I see lol. Though I didn't know exactly what they were up to, I wasn't expecting this so that's pretty cool. I like surprises. A test? Seems like a lot to put Cherry through just to see how she would react to it. But that's okay because I still love them all, they're are beautiful criminals. 😀
I don't think Cherry is going anywhere despite her threats. Even if she hates to admit it, Gabriel is right. Cherry hated her life back home, so where would she go honestly? Plus hello, I would stay for the ungodly amount of attractive people she lives with I mean come ON. I can't get over it haha. I feel like I'm fangirling over here which I guess I am, but can ya blame me?! I love Raphael just standing there all quiet like. He's probably my fave so far, and I don't have a reason why he just is. LOVED THIS CHAPTER. *sigh* …

    1. I’m really glad you liked this chapter! I’m probably as excited to read your comments as much as you are to read the chapters. Your excitement actually made me laugh out loud, which made my friends look at me like ‘what’ as well haha (since I am at school right now *sigh*).
It’s good that you weren’t expecting it, I always try to put in enough surprises to keep the reader interested throughout the entire chapter. A more complex reason for them being Robin Hood-esque figures will be developed later on.
Lmao yes, Cherry literally has nowhere to go left to go. And idk I think it is a bit strange that they are all good looking, but I couldn’t help trying to make them look nice haha. Raphael is currently not my favourite just because I haven’t developed him in my head (as well as written about him) as much as the Torres brothers, but I still love him a lot! 🙂
Thank you so much for reading and giving your thoughts (however fangirly!), Simsered! ❤

      1. Your writing and screenshots really are so good, I’m envious lol. But also inspired to try harder and maybe bump up the quality of my own in the next generation. I have to give you serious props because it looks like this would take forever to do and make it look as perfect as you do!
It’s hard to pick a favorite because they are all so cool, but there’s just something about Raph that I like. His looks obviously, but the small bits I’ve seen of him so far I like!
It is really neat to see how far this legacy has developed since you started it. I can still remember when I first discovered Fern’s story. 🙂 This legacy is so good, and I hope there are many more generations to come! ❤

        1. I’m glad I am inspiring you! It does take sacrifice in terms of time, though, although it is worth it in the end when you finally manage to post. I remember how for Generation 1 I just took pictures rapidly and randomly without stressing about every single detail in each screenshot. The good old days when I actually played sims, LOL.
I am pretty proud of the development and I am hoping it will continue to improve for the (hopefully) 7 more generations to come! I am also doing a casting call for the next generation so it would be really great to have a sim of yours in my story!

          Liked by 1 person

        2. Yes! I love all these casting calls everyone is doing for their stories right now. I’d love to submit a sim when the time comes. Seeing my sim in another story would be so awesome! I’ve given serious thought to doing something similar in my next generation also, but I’m not sure if I will. There’s so many choices! 🙂

  4. Very detailed chapter. Just like others, I liked the Robin Hood idea! Cherry is really a brave girl, I love how she coped with muggers! Is Lucifer hitting on her as well? Eww, stop, that’s too much! I hope we can soon find out more about what they really do wandering around the dark alleys of the poisonous city!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thanks! And haha I don’t think he was hitting on her at all during this chapter, but a girl can have more than one guy liking her at once, lol. Just a warning if you find it too much already that it gets a LOT more intense in future chapters!

  5. Lila Remonn you god. This chapter was so good that I felt sad because I am not good at writing. You know how I feel sad when I see talented people. Sigh. Pictures inaccurate and not detailed enough my foot. If you add more detail I won’t even notice it. You’re pictures don’t even look like Sims 3, how…(Angela and I discussed this in English in fact).
Your story is very interesting indeed and I very much want to see how relationships develop. I also want to see what your story will look like next year because it would probably be on a whole other level by then.
I am very proud of you, my child. Good job and may you write stories for a long time to come.

    1. Oh my gosh Xin thank you so much! I know you are sad but I used to be hella noob remember, it’s literally only because I have more time than you to take pictures/write. I bet if you didn’t have all the homework for calc and stuff you would be on the same level as I am. And wow, you and Angela talking about that in English, lmao you could do a visual text analysis essay on it…
I am actually really excited to see what my legacy will look like by Gen 4 comes around. I’m hoping the sims as well as the pictures (well I’m not sure if I can improve much on the actual picture taking, maybe the editing) will take a huge step up.
I hope when the holidays come you will find inspiration to write as well~ ❤

      1. Thank you for your nice comment, my friend. You make me happy and proud to be your friend. There is a place in my heart for you. May you achieve great things like making really beautiful sims and editing pictures so that they look amazing. I look forward to it.

  6. So they are robin hoods? BOOOOOOOOOO WHAT MY SUPERNATURAL KILLER GANG FUCKKK. Ugh, I GUESS being Robin hood is cool, too. I GUESS. One thing though, Best Turtle dyed his hair black last chapter, but in this chapter you said “or Raphael’s emerald hair”, so that’s a bit inconsistent. You’ll note that I’m keeping tabs on everything Raph at this point. So you can count on me to let you know if anything is wrong on that front. I got you, Boo.

    1. Bro I’m over supernatural stuff, like even the Supernatural EP I regretted buying instead of Seasons… like I literally ruined it for myself in Gen 2 🙂 Oh and heyyyyy Raphie changes his hair colour frequently, so unless it’s differing from the pics it ain’t wrong dude. And thanks for having the back of this babbers.

  7. Phew, fortunately they’re not killers! And hopefully Cherry will stick around now…
I kinda ship her and Lucifer too, I think he’s less serious and “heavy” than Gabriel and the he’d balance Cherry out nicely ❤
It was a pleasure seeing Cherry take out those thugs and kicking some butt lol! 😎

  8. Oooohhhh… modern day Robin Hoods. Cool. I’m pretty zonked while reading this, so my mind’s really not functioning well enough to say something significant, but I really do like it. I’m a bit confused by the bar scene and how she ended up seeing them, but… as I said, I’m zonked.

I think what really struck me was what Gabriel told her in the end. I’m surprised he knows her so well. They didn’t seem to spend much time together beyond him rescuing her from Teddy, so I’m really intrigued by the intuitiveness he seems to have when it comes to her. It also makes me kind of distrust him, even if I am shipping the two hard.

I definitely agree though. She feels safe with them, because she’s not treated like some sort of freak. Can’t blame her. She didn’t exactly get much love. I guess she got it from Briar, in Briar’s unique own way, but well… Yeah. I get her.

I don’t get them. Why? What was Gabriel doing in Sunset Valley to begin with? Why did he show up to rescue her? What makes this group of people tick? I need to get to know them for me to care for them. I guess I get now why you feel the need to give back stories for several of the characters. It’ll definitely help me connect with them more. Right now, I don’t understand anybody other than Cherry, so I’m really surprised you say that nobody genuinely likes her. I guess I get Gabriel to some extent, but I’m looking forward to the back story you mentioned. Right now, he’s just this broody, kickass guy who seems to weave in and out of her life at his leisure, and I don’t think she needs that.

I feel really weird, but I kind of have this protective instinct over Cherry. It’s weird, because she’s probably the type who wouldn’t want that, because she wants to be able to protect herself. Very Briar.

    1. Haha… I don’t even know what’s going on in that bar scene as well. It’s not very well constructed. Basically in the last chapter someone mentioned they were going to the Grind, although Cherry saw them carrying weapons as well. So she went to the Grind and saw that Lilith was influencing a guy into drinking lots of alcohol. The guy in question is the owner of the house the others went to steal from.

So many questions! I’m glad you’re asking them! Answers will filter in gradually. I think I dumped too many questions at the start but I can’t do anything about that now so I’ll try give the answers at a reasonable place.
We definitely need backstories. The only reason I care about my characters is because I know their backstories, LOL. Which again is not that great but at least I know what to work on for the next generation!
It’s still surprising me how much you like Cherry! I’ve never seen anyone talk about her like this. Then again, I think you’re the person who has seen this story with most depth, it’s very interesting. You’re even giving me a new perspective on Cherry 😯
Cherry is a strange character in that she’s quite naive and sensitive but also always on the defensive and ready to fight. I guess that’s Briar’s fault in the way she raised her children. I get what you mean about the protective instinct, but I’m a very no-nonsense person when it comes to romance, so I’m always shaking my head at her. But it’s not really her fault. Briar being so distant and not there for her children, but being so strict and tough has hardened the triplets on the exterior but has left them with hidden insecurities and problems. So all three of them have the same issue with opening up and trusting, which also lead to them growing apart. And wow, lmao. I literally just realised that. You really have a talent for making me see things I have unconsciously done in my writing.

      1. Thanks for the clarification regarding The Grind. Cherry is so much like Briar in how curious and nosy she is. She just doesn’t seem to have the sense of direction and purpose Briar has.

Haha! Well, I think I’ve become too invested in your characters to not want to figure out how they tick. And Cherry gets to me, because I’ve encountered so many girls like her. Girls who’ve experienced trauma at young ages, girls who’ve been bullied, girls with disconnected parents… Boys too, actually. They build walls around themselves. Naturally and understandably, trust will be an issue.

        1. That’s true. Young Briar was very nosy, and while she made mistakes, she was a lot more outgoing and straight up. I think Cherry is much more afraid of displeasing people.
To be honest, I don’t know a lot of people like Cherry, except for myself, and I’ve definitely lived a much better life than her. And it’s weird because I think I was told by another reader that Cherry’s level of sensitivity, comparing to what she’s been through, was too high. Which was the main reason why I think she’s too sensitive. Hmm… there must be a lot more people like that than I thought then.

  9. Weird how Cherry appears to be more emotional around Gabriel than when she was with her family – I guess she didn’t have much to cry about then, but she seemed stronger back home – perhaps the foreignness and strangeness of her new ‘home’ is why. So the gang seems less shady now, but not totally in the clear – still not sure why they feel the need to test Cherry but I’m assuming all shall be revealed in time~ I’ve already begun to ship her and Gabe haha. Love the song choice by the way, it totally suited the vibe of the night with Cherry walking & biking alone 🙂

    1. Cherry is certainly more emotional in Bridgeport. The whole experience is scary for her. Without Briar to look after her, and away from the safety of her home, she can’t cope with all these new feelings- you hit the nail right on the head there!

  10. Well, Gabriel and the others sure are lucky Cherry didn’t see their fakey murder and just… run to the police right away. But it’s probably as he says – she feels at home, despite all the strangeness.
It’s funny you call these pictures meh and here I was thinking it’s probably the prettiest chapter yet 🙂 so gorgeous-looking!

    1. Oh gosh this is one of the plot points I was staring at when I recently went back to edit and was wishing I could take out all together, it honestly makes no sense LOL. Cherry’s ridiculous decision #34788321680!
      And thank you 💕

  11. I love Bridgeport – your pictures draws out the emptiness some quarters in a big City has, and the club pictures where just great with much athmosphere! It sure was a surprise for her to learn about their business, especially as she had jumped to conclusions!

    1. Oh yes, that emptiness actually annoys me a lot, sometimes I just want a big lively looking city and Bridgeport is just… dead.
I’m glad you like the club pictures because they were sooo painful to take- my old computer back then couldn’t handle it and the game lagged hard 🤨

  12. God, Raph is just SO HOT I can’t deal with it. Yes… this is a pointless comment, but I just couldn’t keep looking at him and not saying it.

  13. So the blood was a test, hmm? Well, Cherry has proven that she can hold her own and that she’s not so bad at tracking people down, but I wonder what else they were testing for and whether they feel like Cherry has passed.

After Gabriel’s speech, I think I understand what he sees in Cherry and why he invited her to come to Bridgeport with him. A victim of Sunset Valley’s obstinate and judgmental attitudes, she seems exactly the kind of person who might want to fight back against that oppressive system and do something to help people, even if the help isn’t strictly legal. Thus, she could be a good fit for their little Robin Hood group. Possibly. That requires a lot of empathy and care for others, and so far, Cherry has been a bit more self-centered. In that way, perhaps learning about this group and seeing what they do might help her to see that the world doesn’t only revolve around her…or maybe she’ll bite off more than she can chew.

    THE INTRIGUE CONTINUES.

    1. Yep, a very flimsily constructed test, but effective for Cherry, I guess 😆

That’s right! Again, she’s a bit like younger Briar being “chaotic good”, not necessarily taking the lawful and sensible route to achieve her ultimately good goals, but unlike her mother, Cherry is indeed driven by concern for herself rather than the greater good. Her life in Sunset Valley, while rife with bullying and isolation, was fairly cosy—being the daughter of a fairly wealthy police chief, this whole new city, which is far larger and dangerous than Sunset Valley, is really an eye-opener to what the struggles of people are outside her sheltered, privileged life.

  14. Ooooh, okay, interesting! I did think the ‘stay home thing’ was like putting a big red button in front of someone with a neon DO NOT TOUCH sign, so the ruse makes sense LOL. Especially saying something to someone like Cherry haha, I knew there was no way Gabriel really believed she’d stay behind with all that suspiciousness going on.
